GLOBGM CMIP6
A Global Hyper-Resolution Groundwater Dataset for the Past and Future Under Climate and Socioeconomic Change
Global Coverage
~1km Resolution
Open Science
GLOBGM (Global Groundwater Model) is a transient global-scale groundwater flow model operating at a high spatial resolution of 30 arc-seconds (~1 km). It employs a parallelized implementation of MODFLOW 6 with two model layers representing confined and unconfined aquifers. Designed for high-performance computing environments, GLOBGM efficiently simulates groundwater heads and water table depths worldwide, enabling detailed assessments of groundwater dynamics under historical and future climate and socioeconomic scenarios. The model uses refined input data and parameterization to capture global groundwater behavior while addressing computational challenges related to runtime, memory, and data storage at this fine resolution. We present comprehensive groundwater heads and water table depth data following the ISIMIP framework protocols.
Historical Reference
Historical simulations span 1960–2019, forced by GSWP3-W5E5 meteorological data, enabling rigorous validation and impact attribution against observed climate records.
Climate Projections
Projections cover 1960–2100, driven by SSP-RCP scenarios (SSP1-2.6: low; SSP3-7.0: medium-high; SSP5-8.5: high) and GCMs (GFDL-ESM4, IPSL-CM6A-LR, MPI-ESM1-2-HR, MRI-ESM2-0, UKESM1-0-LL) to quantify groundwater dynamics under changing climate-forcings.
